I began tying flies by ordering a vise and materials from Herter's in 1957 when I was 9. I tied trout flies to start with, even though there are no trout in central Alabama where I grew up. Many years later I moved to Colorado, where the trout fishing is great. It was then that I started tying feather wing Atlantic Salmon flies. There are no Atlantic Salmon in Colorado. This seems to be a pattern for me. These days I spend far more time tying the flies than I do fishing. I have only made two trips to fish for Atlantics. Once to Labrador and once to Ireland. I have yet to catch one. But I did get to cast some of my flies both times.
