My name is Jim Haswell and I live in Midland, Michigan. I’ve been fishing for as long as I can remember and started dabbling in fly fishing when I was about 12 years old, although I didn’t get very serious about it until I was 15 or 16. For a long time I only tied flies to support my fishing habit and never really cared how pretty or perfect they looked.

My initial flies were not much to look at, but I stuck with it because it was fun and they caught fish. Later in my adult years I started to pay more attention to the finer details in my steelhead and trout flies and began to take an interest in the history of fly fishing.

For a long time I stared at pictures of traditional Spey and Dee flies and Classic Salmon flies in books and magazines and dreamed of one day tying these beautiful works of art. A few years later I was introduced to my now friend John McLain, at a local fly fishing show, and bought the book Classic Salmon Fly Materials and Tying the Classic Salmon Fly video, both by Mike Radencich. I later went on to tie flies for Mike’s fourth book, Classic Salmon Fly Patterns in 2012, I attended ASFI both in 2014 and 2016 as a fly tier/presenter and I’m currently working with author/guide/lodge owner Matt Supinski as a consultant on his newest book, The Brown Trout ,Atlantic Salmon Nexus. I am now looking forward to another great gathering for ASFI in New Brunswick 2018.
