My name is Daniel Zbylut. I come from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I am 13 years old. I started fly tying when I was 9. I was intrigued with all the colourful feathers and materials I saw when I visited a fly shop. This sparked my interest and I started with a homemade vise, which I constructed from pliers, and YouTube videos. I have made hundreds or maybe thousands of flies for trout. Recently I started tying flies for Calgary's friendliest fly shop, Fish Tales.
In 2015 I met Colin Callbeck at the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition. He has become my mentor, and I learned a lot from him. About two years ago I got interested in classic Atlantic salmon flies. I was very excited when I finished my first salmon fly, the Durham Ranger. My interest has grown and I have gotten better. I recently had a chance to do my first fly tying demonstration at First Alliance Fly Fishing and Tying. My dream is to tie the Black Argus one day. The incredible detail and beauty of the salmon fly fascinates me the most. I look forward to attending the Atlantic Salmon Fly International, and I hope to meet and work alongside some of the famous fly tiers. See you there!
